“The Rich Man and Lazarus” draws inspiration from a story relayed by Jesus to his disciples about two men who meet their fate on the same day. One finds himself in hell, while the other ascends to heaven. Zach and Asher, both Hebrews born with equal opportunities, face a pivotal question: which of them will be condemned to torment, and which will be welcomed into peace after death? The essence of their journey lies in the choices they make throughout their lives, and this is the narrative we will unfold. Set around 600 years B.C., Jerusalem is steeped in idolatry following the reign of several kings who turned away from God. The people of God risk losing all that Moses and Joshua had fought to conquer. Babylon asserts its dominance over the entire Mesopotamian region. After conquering the Egyptians, Nebuchadnezzar ascends the throne of this vast empire. Under his rule, he transforms his city into a jewel of the ancient world, constructing the legendary Hanging Gardens for his beloved wife, Queen Amitis, along with other renowned landmarks like the Gates of Ishtar, temples, and ziggurats. The deep friendship between Zach and Asher faces turmoil as both fall in love with their childhood friend, the enchanting Johanna. However, their lives take a dark turn when Nebuchadnezzar invades Jerusalem, demolishing Solomon’s Temple and enslaving countless Hebrews, marking the onset of the Babylonian Captivity, which endures for 70 years. Zach and Asher find themselves among the captives, witnessing the destruction of their world. Their journey is fraught with separation, reunion, and loss, filled with jealousy, guilt, sorrow, danger, revenge, struggle, sacrifice, and, above all, a fierce rivalry for Johanna’s affection, which threatens to unravel their strong bond. This saga will weave in historical figures and notable biblical prophets such as Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and especially Daniel. A remarkable prophet, Daniel is brought to the Babylonian court, where he rises to prominence after interpreting one of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams, becoming the governor of the capital. He confronts various adversaries in the tumultuous court and experiences legendary biblical events, including the Fiery Furnace, Belshazzar’s Feast, and the Lion’s Den, among others. Asher and Zach serve as both characters and witnesses to these significant historical and biblical events. It is within this ancient world that they will navigate their lives, make choices, face the repercussions of their actions, and strive to achieve their ambitions or face failure.
